Garden 2 Greenhouse (G2) Technical Manager

West Coast, Pacific Northwest, or Southern Territories

Job Description Summary:

The Technical Manager is the commercial team product/agronomic leader in the Garden 2 Greenhouse segment and will report to the Director of G2 with a dotted line or secondary oversight from VP Field Development. The role will lead product and technical material development in the consumer retail and professional G2 segments. The Technical Manager will also participate in concept creation for new business development opportunities, providing the team with real-world experience to help provide a foundation of ideas in what is practical.

The top priorities of this role are: 1) understand the competitive landscape in the G2 segment; both retail and professional, 2) execute product development (research trials and field demonstrations) through relationships with academia and customers or prospective customers, 3) develop compelling data packages for sales and business development and 4) deliver recommendations on new product and segment strategies. The Technical Manager will provide essential connectivity to the marketing, sales, regulatory, formulation and field development teams making them aware of key needs, areas of strength, and market opportunities. The efforts will ultimately result in new product introductions, superior sales performance, and the achievement of the business’ goals.


Location:

Must be sufficiently centralized within West Coast, Pacific Northwest, or Southern territories to maximize access to key markets and contacts. The company provides vehicle, computer, and other office tools for working from home. Salary is commensurate with experience and past performance.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Technical Focus
    • Work with current and prospective customers to understand their needs and target development projects that generate data to create and support claims.
    • Perform market analysis on the competitive landscape of the G2 segments: both retail consumer and professional.
    • Ensure key agronomic resources and messages (using all types of media) are available to sales managers, distributors, dealers, influencers, and users.
    • Maintaining an agronomic support network within and outside of Certis Biologicals.
    • Develop and execute a product testing strategy that results in data that can be used for new product introductions. These include the current portfolio and experimental products.
    • Summarize performance data to drive sales and effectively utilize available products.
    • Engaging important audiences such as consultants, larger and influential customers such as corporate GH growers, tech leads, technical SM bloggers, and distribution partners.
    • Evaluates and builds appropriate business cases for new product opportunities.
    • Brainstorming with internal and external stakeholders on modification/improvement to existing products.
    • Scout field trials and recommend necessary adjustments to management plans.

  • Sales & Marketing Team Support
    • Collaborates with Sales & Marketing to build the business case for new product introductions or modifications to the existing product line.
    • Works with sales management to provide focused technical support and problem solving to growers and partners.

 

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in a Horticulture, Agronomy, Ag/Life Sciences, or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Controlled Environment Agriculture is essential.
  • Agronomic/Horticultural knowledge and experience in the G2 segments; particularly, hemp, vegetables, flowers, annual and perennial plans, and nursery plant production.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to work with limited direction and make decisions independently.
  • Strong verbal and listening communication skills with the ability to creatively solve agronomic/horticultural problems and provide timely and sound recommendations.
  • Good interpersonal relationships and consensus-building. Comfortable speaking in front of people with the ability to make clear and compelling presentations.

  • Strong computer skills (i.e., mobile technology (tablets/smartphones), scientific/statistical software, basic knowledge of databases and information reporting tools, etc.).
  • Ability to photograph and catalog field and demonstration research results.
  • Proficient at reading field protocols, research literature, and field reports translating data/statistics into market-related information.
  • Willingness to travel and work in a hands-on gardening/greenhouse/CEA/nursery environment.
  • The Technical Manager is expected to be engaged with their team members approximately 30% of the time.

 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This position requires normal, everyday use of standard office equipment. There may be a need to involve the handling of some production equipment and the ability to carry finished goods up to 50 pounds. There may be long periods of sitting and driving. There will be field exposure to areas such as, but not limited to, production farms, manufacturing plants and fertilizer, pesticide distributor and applicator sites. 

Travel with this position is 40 to 50%.
