Microbiologist

Job Description Summary

The Microbiologist is an integral part of the R&D team and supports the research and development of biological products in a safe and efficient manner. The duties of the Microbiologist include cultivation and fermentation of various microbial cultures in petri dishes, shake flasks, and small fermenters; maintaining microbial strain collections; performing QC of production batches when necessary; developing new and adapting current methods when required; providing Microbiology guidance and expertise to projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Propagation of microbial strains.
  • Fermentation studies in shake flasks and small fermenters scale.
  • Characterization of microbial strain by microbial techniques.
  • Maintain viability and quality control of strain collection.
  • Perform QC tests for Microbial preparation.
  • Work closely and coordinate with other specialists within the R&D Teamviz. Formulation Scientists, Analytical Chemists, Assistant Scientists.
  • Provide samples for various Regulatory requests.
  • Maintain records of experimental results and archives of data.

Education/Experience:

  • BS degree in Microbiology (Industrial, Pharmaceutical, Food, Dairy, Fermentation) with at least 3 years’ work experience in a lab.
  • Experience in various microbiological methods.
  • Experience in liquid fermentation.
  • Works well in a team environment.
  • Skills: written and verbal communication, organizational, and time management.
  • Qualities: Enthusiastic, curious, dedicated, positive attitude, and a team player.

 

Work Environment/Travel Requirements:

Work is conducted in a laboratory setting, onsite. Position requires sitting and standing for several hours at a time and the ability to push, pull, or lift 40 lb. Possible flexible hours if something urgent needs attending to over the weekend. Travel less than 5%.

The ideal candidate will have leadership, adaptability, and organizational skills with the potential for future advancement into positions of greater responsibility for the company’s long-term strategic growth.

The position is located at the company’s headquarters in the suburban Baltimore/Washington region.
