Certis USA Completes Strategic Re-alignment Divests Teknar Biological Insecticide to Valent Biosciences
COLUMBIA, MD, MARCH 12, 2003 – Certis U.S.A. L.L.C., a subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., Ltd., completes a strategic re-alignment of its pesticide business allowing it to more effectively meet the demand for its IPM-related product line for the specialty agriculture market. As a part of the re-alignment, Certis USA announces the divestiture of its public health biological larvacide, Teknar®, a mosquito and black fly control product used in the public health industry, to Valent BioSciences, Libertyville, IL.
Under the agreement to sell its Teknar brand products to Valent BioSciences, Certis USA transfers its Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis strains, patents, trademarks, registrations, manufacturing process, R&D programs and customer contracts. In addition, Certis USA grants Valent BioSciences exclusive worldwide rights to market to forestry markets its Thuricide® biological insecticide, which controls Lepidopteran (worm) pests, such as gypsy moth and spruce budworm. Certis USA will continue to manufacture both Teknar and Thuricide for Valent BioSciences.

This re-alignment of our business, which included last year’s purchase of the Ecogen, Inc. agricultural Bt-product portfolio, along with our divestiture of Teknar today, allows us to concentrate on serving our key markets while also allowing us to maintain our capacity in our manufacturing facilities. Certis USA is actively looking to expand its specialty agricultural IPM portfolio.”
Certis USA also announces the reorganization of its sales management team naming Dave McManama, Eastern Regional Sales Manager, and Bret Menagh, Western Regional Sales Manager. McManama, previously a Senior Sales Manager for Certis USA, has been with the company for six years. McManama is based in Indianapolis, IN. Menagh, in Fresno, CA, is promoted from his Sales Manager position, which he has held with Certis USA since 1999. USA NAFTA Sales Vice President Tim Damico said, “Our new sales organization is ideal, because it allows us to concentrate on and better serve the specialty agricultural markets.”
