Safety Manager

Job Description Summary:

The Health and Safety Manager is responsible for managing and monitoring safety programs, policies and procedures that meet OSHA and other state and local programs. The Health and Safety Manager plans, implements and oversees the Company's employee safety programs. Main duty is to ensure that the Company is in compliance and adheres to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines to reduce and mitigate work-related injuries.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts/Oversees monthly employee safety training.
  • Investigates workplace accidents and injuries and identifies root causes.
  • Plans and implements OHSA policies and programs.
  • Advises and leads employees on various safety-related topics.
  • Reviews and updates existing policies and procedures, as required.
  • Works with HR to set up a new employee on-boarding process for safety.
  • Conducts risk assessment and enforces preventative measures.
  • Identifies process bottlenecks and offers timely solutions.
  • Checks if all the employees are acting in adherence with rules and regulations.
  • Creates and implements safety plans while ensuring that they are followed daily.
  • Attends safety walks and inspections before or during each project to analyze safety risks.
  • Educates employees on safety standards and expectations as well as safe machinery operations.
  • Provides recommendations for improving safety in the workplace.
  • Maintains documentation of the company's safety procedures, accidents, and related events
  • Act as a liaison between management and external safety agencies, such as fire and insurance personnel
  • Ensures the absence of biological, physical or chemical hazards from the workplace.
  • Advise the company’s administrative team on safety issues and compliance in specific projects and operations.
  • Inspect and verify company compliance with relevant safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and current records in accordance with guidelines.
  • Analyze incident reports, metrics and injury case studies to institute changes that lead to a safer environment.

Work Environment:

  • May be required to work outside in hot, cold and wet conditions.

Education/Experience:

  • BS/BA in safety management or similar field; business administration, law or relevant field
  • 7-10 years of experience as a Health and safety or similar role
  • Excellent knowledge of local and legislations and procedures
  • Experience with writing policies and procedures for health and safety
  • Organizes and conducts OSHA training plans.
  • Excellent knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
  • 5 years of experience in producing reports
  • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
  • Working knowledge of safety management information system
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Critical thinker and problem-solving skills
  • Good time-management skills
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills
  • Certificate in occupational health and safety (OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour)
  • Registration as a Certified Safety Professional or similar form of licensure as a safety officer
  • Experience with PowerPoint, Excel, and auditor safety software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation.
  • Understanding of federal, state and city safety requirements, including OSHA
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities at the same time while meeting deadlines.
  • Interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective professional relationships with employees and project managers.
  • Understanding of how to read blueprints and other construction plans preferred in some fields.
  • Leadership skills, such as the ability to motivate a team and provide feedback.
  • Advise on provisions to minimize safety risks.
  • Develop and enforce OSHA policies (e.g., accident reporting process)
  • Direct accident investigation procedures
  • Keep records of safety-related incidents and propose corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with managers to monitor compliance and identify safety issues.
  • Intervene in unsafe activities or operations.
  • Liaise with and report to official regulatory bodies on OSH matters.
  • Certified health and safety technician (Preferred)
  • Certified safety professional (Preferred)
